Recap of the South Florida IMA September Event: The State of Search with Google’s Gary Illyes

Our September event was one for the record books. Not only was it the 15th anniversary of the South Florida IMA, but Google’s own Gary Illyes discussed what’s new in the state of search.

During the event Gary revealed to attendees how you can ensure your content comes up first in Google search rankings. Google is the most popular search engine in the world with over 75% of the search market share.

If your website is not being shown at the top of search rankings your audience isn’t able to find you and you’re missing out on potential revenue. Therefore, optimizing your Google ranking should be an integral tactic in your marketing strategy.

To increase your company’s Google ranking good URLs are critical. Ensure that your URLs are descriptive and reflect what your content is about. Also, ensure that your site is secure via Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) which is indicated by https:// versus http:// at the beginning of your URLs. This helps convey that your site is secure, and consumers’ information is private, and increases your chances of being picked up by Google rankings. Also, Google has begun to display warnings when a user tries to access a site that is not secure which can be a turn off to users.

Moreover, make sure you offer your readers quality content. Quality content is clear and not obscured by too many ads. Interstitial ads can increase conversions but can also negatively affect the user experience. Too many ads on your site can ding your Google ranking so use them sparingly.

Mobile-First Indexing (MFI) is happening. Sites that are mobile optimized are receiving 40-50% more of search impressions and higher priority in Google rankings. Ensure your critical content is mobile optimized to take advantage of MFI.
